Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Electoral boycotts, in which voters or political parties refuse to participate in elections, have significant implications for political participation and the legitimacy of the electoral process. In Yola North Local Government, Adamawa State, boycotts have been employed by different groups as a form of protest against electoral malpractices, dissatisfaction with political candidates, or perceived unfairness in the electoral process. This study examines the impact of electoral boycotts on political participation and the broader political landscape in Yola North (Dawud & Olatunde, 2024).

1.2 Statement of the Problem
While electoral boycotts can be seen as a form of political protest, they also pose challenges to democratic processes, particularly when they affect voter turnout and the overall credibility of elections. In Yola North, the recurring boycotts have led to concerns about political disengagement, reduced voter participation, and questions about the legitimacy of election results. This study aims to assess the effects of electoral boycotts on political participation in the local government (Musa & Sani, 2023).

The findings will contribute to understanding the broader consequences of electoral boycotts on democracy, participation, and governance, and will suggest possible solutions for improving voter engagement in future elections.
